Who We Are
Grandmothers Partnering With Africa (GPWA) came together in late 2011 through a shared desire to join the thousands of Canadian grandmothers and "grandothers" who are stepping up to the challenge of raising awareness and funds to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers.
African grandmothers are central to the life of their communities. With almost no support, they are caring for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. They display astonishing reserves of love, courage and resilience, even while grieving the loss of their own adult children.
GPWA is proud to be part of this Campaign and to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Astounding but true, 90 cents of every dollar raised in the Grandmothers Campaign goes directly to these on-the-ground initiatives, not to administration, bureaucracy, or government departments.
Funds raised for the Grandmothers Campaign are sent directly to the community level, to grassroots organizations that provide grandmothers and the children in their care with supports that include
- educational supplies,
- uniforms and school fees,
- medical care,
- HIV counselling and testing,
- adequate housing and bedding,
- counselling and support groups,
- home visits, and much more
The Grandmothers Campaign to date has raised over $19 million for the
What We Do
Our mission is to build awareness and to raise the necessary funds to "Turn the Tide" of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
We build awareness through holding education evenings with guest speakers and field staff of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We invite all who wish to be contacted to these evenings.
We are also in the process of training to become speakers to social and community groups.
To raise funds we have held a Wine and Cheese event, sold beautiful Kazuri jewellery, and participated in the annual GTA walkathon, the Stride Walk.
