CURRENT NEWS

Tribute to Lilian Mendelsohn

On March 12, 2019 we said goodbye to one of our dear members, Lil Mendelsohn, seen on the right of this picture taken at the first event held by Grandmothers Partnering with Africa in December 2011 in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers Campaign. Lil was active in the group from its inception and was supportive and involved with everything we did right up until our most recent event late last year. She was a very strong, caring person who fought for social justice for all. It was clear from the eulogies how important family and especially grandchildren were to Lil - she was an amazing role model who will be greatly missed by all who knew her!

Ilana Landsberg Lewis:

Extract from her annual letter to Grandmothers and Grandothers

“The ripple effects across generations, through tens of thousands of lives, both in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the Campaign and our own families and communities, and as a global inspiration – of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the $33 million raised – is simply revolutionary, stirring, and intensely meaningful. As I write, I feel words are inadequate to capture the significance of your dedication and tireless efforts, and the extraordinary strides and life-altering progress made by the African Grandmothers and their grassroots organizations. It fills our hearts and keeps us in exhilarated lock-step with you!”

Grandmother Campaign Conference Calls

Grandmothers Partnering With Africa (GPWA) came together in late 2011 through a shared desire to join the thousands of Canadian grandmothers and "grandothers" who are stepping up to the challenge of raising awareness and funds to fight the spread of AIDS in Africa.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers.

African grandmothers are central to the life of their communities. They are caring for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. They display astonishing reserves of love, courage and resilience, even while grieving the loss of their own adult children.

GPWA is proud to be part of this Campaign and to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Astounding but true, 90 cents of every dollar raised in the Grandmothers Campaign goes directly to these on-the-ground initiatives, not to administration, bureaucracy,  or government departments.
