GPWA Launch December 6, 2011
On December 6th, 2011 Grandmothers Partnering With Africa hosted a Wine and Cheese evening to launch the formation of our group. Our guest speaker was Dr. Richard Borshay Lee, Anthropologist and University Professor Emeritus (University of Toronto). He spoke on "AIDS in Africa: A Report from the Front Lines".
In two decades of research and capacity building, Richard Lee has seen the continent at its worst, as the disease ravaged whole communities, and at its best –as African nurses, doctors and community activists fought, alongside overseas workers, to bring the epidemic under control. Drawing on personal experiences in Botswana, South Africa and Namibia, Professor Lee shared his knowledge of communities, individuals, and grass-roots groups, like the grandmothers, who are making a difference, protecting the vulnerable, reducing suffering, and restoring hope and dignity.
The event was attended by approximately 100 people and was a huge success in raising awareness and funds. There was also great donated food and drink, enjoyed by all.
